I have seen many a post asking the same questions:

which is the best? which does this or that?
which box goes down the least? and so on.

while these are good questions to ask, they should not be the first
step in choosing a new stb.

keep in mind that buying a new stb is an investment not only of $$$$,
but of time. so spend your hard earned $$$ and time wisely.
the same way you would when considering the purchase
of a car or house.

the best thing to do prior deciding to buy a new stb is to go
read up on those boxes that have caught your attention.
when reading on them, keep an eye out for the "little things" like:
1. frequent box issues and how they are resolved.
2. how they are loaded. is it only serial or does it have USB capability?
3. what is the general attitude towards this box, great, good, "well, it's better than nothing"?
4. what are it's special features? do they seem too complicated? is this something that
i can handle? do i really need those features?
5. is this box reliable or just full of glitz?
6. is it a recent release? are there any clone issues?

after you get a feel for the boxes that interest you, then go into the guides section
for those boxes and see how much info is posted regarding the "how to's" and
the fixes for the issues that arise for those boxes. you, of course, would want
to have as much info available as possible.

then, check out the files section to see how often releases for the boxes are made available.

after you have done this "snooping" around, now ask your questions. by this time you should have narrowed your choices to at least 1 strong candidate.
but remember, at this point, your looking for objective opinions from experienced
people. most testers will swear by their boxes. you want opinions that will
give you pro's and con's for that box, which by that time you should already know.
you're just looking for confirmation.

regardless of the choice you made, always remember it is your responsibility to choose wisely because you will have to deal with all things pertaining to that box. so don't choose the best box because it is the best. choose the box that is best for you.

read up in the guides section for that box and get a feel for what you are going to buy.
most problems that arise when setting up new boxes are mainly human error
due to the new owner not getting ready to receive the new addition.

i hope this helps in your choosing process.
whatever you decide to get, enjoy it to the fullest.

take care
