On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee's Commercial and Administrative Law subcommittee approved H.R. 3679, the State Video Tax Fairness Act.
The bill, sponsored by Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah), allows states to tax any pay-TV service as long as the tax is equal across all providers. The bill takes aim at a number of satellite-only taxes in a handful of states.
DIRECTV and DISH Network applauded the subcommittee move, saying in a joint statement that the vote is "a victory for all consumers, satellite and cable alike, who want to choose their video provider based on price, quality and customer service not based on which one has a lower state sales tax."
