Is is it not a site rule not to use an email address as a user name ? I believe it's not every FTA site. Yet I see newbies doing it, asking questions , Admin's as well as Mod's answering them not telling them about it or changing it, including here. You guy's do a heck of job an we need to protect each other.

There are no site rules against it, but I do PM users about possibly changing their usernames so as not to reflect an email address...I don't do it in an open thread, because I don't want to bring attention to it...Like you did...
I try, along with the other Mods to be a little more discreet when addressing things like this..
We wouldn't want a user getting spammed to death because they used an email address for a username instead of just picking a different username.

Yeah, it's not a site rule. Some people have emails that they use solely for this type of stuff. We don't recommend it, but if that is what people wanna do, then it's their business I suppose....

Chameleon, either I'm reading your thread posted 9/29/08 in site Rules wrong or I can't read cause I'm blind. It's there in Black & White' The 1st Rule . No disrespect intended, for as I said you guys do a heck of a job.

It's a 4 letter word called SPAM. need we say more? That's why bcc was invented. It's not our problem.... but we like to educate people on public safety.

Hot Dog I respect your reply, and have reread the rule. Sorry but I still read it the same way. I'll just leave it to you guys to handle it. On other sites I belong to, it simply is not allowed for any reason. #1 Privacy as previously stated. #2 God forbid it ever happening on any site, Protect membership in the event of a Bust, it makes tracing members harder. Some sites don't even allow it in member profiles. Nuff Said.

Here's the rule:
NO usernames that contain urls are allowed. For your safety, you shouldn't use a username that contains your full email address. If you have already registered with your email address or url, you may contact an admin to have it changed.
As it says, we recommend that people don't use them for their own safety. But it is purposely worded with "should" and "may". If users choose to ignore our suggestion, we aren't going to waste our time going through the user database to change them all.
Enforcing it in the name of safety is really kind of a joke anyway, since at every vbulletin based site an email address is associated with every account in the user DB. In the event of a bust or compromise all the info is there quite easily. That is why every site should have a script at the ready (as we do) that will wipe the server in a matter of minutes if it were to become necessary.
